SIGN WITH ME - TALES FROM FRIENDS
I loved the sign language series of classes! The amount and content
of the signs that we learned was varied and completely applicable
to our daily routines; so, I find that I am using many signs with
my child all day long. What I really appreciated most about Davi's
teaching style was how she makes signing so simple and accessible
to anyone; she illustrates many possible scenarios and opportunities
where we can insert sign language into our day whether that be playing,
eating, reading a book, safety, or going on an outing with our child.
We also really enjoyed the "Sign2Me" music that she used
with the class.
I find that signing really helped empower my child. She seems to be more patient and doesn't become as frustrated when she knows that we understand what she's trying to communicate. And she is certainly very proud of herself as well! Signing also gives us a little insight as to just how much is going on in that little growing brain. Our daughter is now 10 months old and is using the signs for "milk" and "dog".
I thought I would tell you that after months of signing to baby,
it is clear that he understands what we're saying and last week
signed for the first time (he's 9 1/2 months). He sat underneath
the hall light and signed "light" and when I turned it
on, he laughed and laughed and laughed! He was so happy to be understood!
Thanks for helping us acquire this great tool to help communicate
with our son!
We really enjoyed attending the signing class. It was such a great introduction to the signs. The pace was just right and we learned the signs that were most important for our communication with each other at this stage. My husband and I were lucky in that he could arrange his schedule so that we both could attend (and thank you for welcoming us both into the class). Having 2 of us there made it possible for at least one of us to be paying full attention, even if our daughter was crawling away or getting squirmy. We could also go over what we learned that day on the way home and refresh each other's memory. I think that it's a good idea when you'd talked about advertising for parents of younger babies and pregnant mothers. That way, these parents might be able to get the benefit of the class and learning the signs, before their babies arrive or become super-active.
Davi, I want you to know what a fantastic job you did with the class. Being a teacher myself, I know what it takes to make a good lesson. You put it all together, especially in conditions that most teachers don't have to deal with. You had babies AND adults as students. You were patient and caring with both groups, especially when it seemed like everyone's attention was being demanded by their own little one. This class was really worthwhile, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to my friends.
I wanted to let you know that our son has begun using the first of hopefully many signs: he has started to hold out his arms to us when he wants “up.” This is an approximation of our pointing up before we can pick him up. Yea!
I first signed with my now ten year old daughter...but I truly discovered the full potential of signing after Davi's classes with my one year old son...the best part is watching him sign with his big sister!
My son and I took Davi's class beginning when he was around 7 months. We really knew that he comprehended some of the signs when he was about 9 months. He became excited when we would sign "jumping" because he knew that we were going to play a jumping game with him.
Also, he loved to read and would go get one of his books when we signed "book." Now he mostly signs more, ball, and mama's milk. He would probably sign more words, but we have not really been consistent with signing lately.
Nevertheless.... I highly recommend signing with your baby because
it gives you insight into your child's mind early on. As early as
10 months, my son would wake up and sign "ball." It was
cool to know what he was thinking about when he woke up. Also, it
has been really fascinating in other ways. I have noticed that just
as people talk in their sleep, people (even babies) will sign in
their sleep. For example, I have seen my son sign "more"
while he was sleeping.
My husband and I plan to sign with other children when we have them.
